Education: studied poetry and art at the following institutions: Oregon State, Stony Brook University, Feminist Art Institute, New York City, Suffolk Community College, Ruth Leaf
Studios master classes under the poets Marvin Bell, David Wagoner, C.K. Williams.

Awards:  Nominated for the Pushcart Prize by Big Pond Rumours (Canada) for the poem, “With Tools Pyramiding Around Him”   

2022 - Present Board member of Long Island Poetry & Literature Repository

2019-2021: Served as Poet Laureate, Suffolk County (until June 2021).

2018:  Chosen to serve as a mentor in the mentoring program initiated by our current poet laureates, Gladys Henderson (Suffolk County) and Peter Dugan (Nassau County).

2015-2018:  Launched a fundraiser each year to fund the Poetry Barn in Huntington, hosted by George Wallace.

2014: Served on the editorial-selection committee under Gladys Henderson to select and edit poems for the book, A Taste of Poetry, published in 2015 by Walt Whitman Birthplace Association.
 
2013-Present:  
Selected as one of the Judges for the annual children’s poetry contest at Walt Whitman Birthplace.
 
2013-2020:  
Planned and conducted poetry workshops at Walt Whitman State Historic Site and Interpretive Center for Long Island students as well as those from further distances. She was selected to run a workshop for a class that traveled from West Yorkshire, England. Barbara also worked with children and adults who are learning English as their second language, using poetry to help develop language skills.
 
2002-Present:  
Co-editor of Xanadu, a national literary journal published by The Long Island Poetry Collective, which has been active since 1973. I serve as one of the facilitators from The Long Island Poetry Collective and help run workshops in the Huntington Library.

2000-2006:  Worked with children at risk at Pederson-Krag Clinic, teaching life skills. While there, I created and directed a poetry celebration for the children and their families at the Conklin Museum in Huntington, New York. The children, ranging in age from 7 to 14, wrote their own poems and were able to read them in front of an audience.

1983-2000:  Worked in the graphics art field as a graphic artist.

1976-1983:  Free-lance artist, Atelier manager.
